چکیده

In 1957, Smith, Espir, Whitty, and Russell described what they regarded as characteristic changes in the spinal fluid of patients with multiple sclerosis following intrathecal injection of tuberculin (purified protein derivative, P.P.D.). They regarded these changes as indicating an abnormal and possibly specific immunological reaction, suggested that the administration of P.P.D. "might be beneficial in multiple sclerosis", and quoted initial clinical observations which seemed to lend some support to this view. The spinal fluid changes described were

Effect of intrathecal purified protein derivative of tuberculin in multiple sclerosis.

In a preliminary report by Smith, Espir, Whitty, and Russell (1957) it was suggested that the intrathecal administration of purified protein derivative of tuberculin (P.P.D.) might be beneficial to patients with multiple sclerosis. It was also observed that apart from the immediate reaction no patient deteriorated who had experienced a definite response. These workers were unable to find eviden...

The non-specificity of the intrathecal reaction to tuberculin in multiple sclerosis.

The intrathecal injection of the purified protein derivative of tuberculin (P.P.D.) was used by Smith, Vollum, Taylor, and Taylor (1956) in the treatment of tuberculous meningitis. They had been led to use this method by the observation that the cellular and protein content of the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with tuberculous meningitis showed marked fluctuations which they believed to be du...

Safety and effectiveness assessment of intravenous immunoglobulin in the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis: A meta-analysis

Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is an established treatment of immune mediated demyelinating neuropathy including Guillain-Barré syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. Recent trials suggest its efficacy in treating relapsing- remitting multiple sclerosis. IVIG exerts a number of effects, which may be beneficial in treating multiple sclerosis (MS): R...

Does Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy Help Multiple Sclerosis Patients? Report of a Pilot Study

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with their potential to differentiate into mesodermal and non-mesodermal lineages have several immunomodulatory characteris-tics. These properties make them promising tools in cell and gene therapy. Objective: To evaluate the potential therapeutic applications of autologous MSC in improving clinical manifestations of MS patients. Methods: Ten patients w...
